To me, image-making is about capturing what feels real. I think the instinct to read a room — knowing when to wait and when to press the shutter — comes largely from my teenage years in Tanzania, far from home and used to making quick sense of unfamiliar situations without always having the words for it. I carry that instinct with me into every assignment today. As a cinematographer and registered professional photographer, I focus on bringing out real stories with presence and respect. I'm based in Södermanland, Sweden, but work across the country and internationally, always keeping the human story at the centre.

I'm driven by documenting our times and giving voice to people's lives, often combining in-depth visual material with my own written reportage and articles. Right now I'm serving as Director of Photography (DoP) on two ongoing feature-length documentaries — work that calls for patience and an instinct for the unplanned moment. From subtle gestures to spontaneous instants, I try to create a visual language, whether in motion or stills, that stays with the viewer.

Experience and Craft

A solid education at Stockholm Film School and Molkom Film gave me the tools, but it's through the countless hours behind the camera on real shoots that I keep developing my cinematic eye — I still think of myself as someone who's learning. I've filmed and photographed documentaries both in Sweden and abroad, and to me, cinematography is an ongoing process where technique and intuition go hand in hand.

What I try to get better at with every project is reading a situation quickly — whether it's a controlled studio setup or unpredictable conditions out in the field — and always letting the visual expression serve the story.

The Creative Process Behind a Documentary Production

Working with documentary storytelling is about much more than just pressing record. As a cinematographer, I often step into people's lives during sensitive or intense moments, and that's a trust I take seriously. It calls for empathy and respect, so the people involved feel safe in front of the camera — my goal is always to become a natural part of the environment, not a disruption.

By combining that interpersonal instinct with the technology I bring to a shoot, I make sure the footage isn't just beautiful, but also carries the story forward. Every scene I shoot needs a purpose and has to push the narrative along, whether it's for a short corporate film or a feature-length documentary for cinema or TV.

Crafting the Visual Language

Every project calls for its own visual palette. Whether it's a raw, fast-paced reportage or a cinematic feature documentary, the choice of lenses, lighting and framing is always deliberate — I want the look to reflect the mood of the story, not just look good.

My approach combines the raw intimacy of available light with what I can add through colour and film gear. The technique should never overshadow the human element in the image, only bring it forward — so the audience stays emotionally invested through the whole story.
